The whole monumental complex, often described as the most magnificient metropolis of the new world, still remains shrouded in dense mysteries which hide the age, the function, the symbolism. The names of the monuments were translated by Spanish from those given by the Aztecs, who arrived here for the first time in the twelfth century AD and assimilated the local legends and mythology handed down from generation to generation, such as the one telling about the stones of these structures, arranged by giants to transform men into gods.
In fact, the darkness of the oblivion surrounds the identity and intentions of the ancient and meticulous builders.
The restorations, which often configured as a plundering of the precious materials found, rather than bringing to light the truth have nurtured a large number of theories in the last century: many of them are clearly fantastic, some others interesting and have solid foundations.
Surprising is the sublime use of mathematics, with the occurrence of ¶ in the construction of geometries. The exact value of this number was calculated by Archimedes in the ancient western world, and considered unknown in the new world until the arrival of the Europeans, enough to confer to this place an aura of transcendence.
Relations with the astronomy are a wonder, and some theories, like the one of Harleston, find no explanation if not assuming the manufacters had a knowledge about the solar system superior of that gained by the international community since 1930.
Geometric, mathematical, astronomincal similarities with the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt, are also surprising, and certainly the large number of coincidences and parallelisms which can not be explained return to this place a unique charm at disposal of the visitor who faces with such a geometric grandeur.
